Creepy new reality show actually tries to persuade people to murder an old man
Netflix just released the trailer for their upcoming reality show, Derren Brown: The Push.
This creepy new series, however, isn’t exactly like other reality television shows. In this show, unwitting participants are manipulated into murdering an old man.
It’s all an act, of course, though the participants think it is very real.
Host Derren Brown calls himself a “psychological illusionist” and the crux of the show involves him and a team of 70 actors trying to convince participants to push an old man off a building, murdering him.
Yeah. You read that right. The elaborately designed show is a test to see if human beings can be manipulated into committing murder.
“I need him to feel like there’s only one way out when he’s told to commit murder,” Brown says of the show’s unwitting participant.
“The question we’re asking is simple,” he continues. “Can we be manipulated through social pressure to commit murder?”
“Can social compliance be used to make someone push a living breathing human being to their death?”
Of course, Netflix isn’t needed to answer that question. In the 1960s, Yale University psychologist Stanley Milgram conducted the infamous “Milgram Experiment,” which tested to see if people would offer up a lethal dose of electricity to a test subject just because an authority figure told them to.
Though the experiment is widely derided as one of the most unethical psychological experiments of all time, the results did show that human beings will go to extreme lengths when a person of authority tells them they are required to do so.
Derren Brown: The Push premieres February 27.
